The Year of Compassion
Dear Friends,
This year has already been a wild ride for the Pro-Life Movement. On one side, we have easily the most abortion-minded administration in U.S. history. On the other side, we’ve seen some rockstar moves by pro-life governors, justices, states, and organizations that have given us surprising victories. Needless to say, it’s shaping up to be an interesting few years.
But while many of the prominent members of the abortion lobby are becoming increasingly extreme and brazen in their tactics, the Pro-Life Movement has responded by improving our strategy to better sway hearts and share our life-affirming message with the public. As ever-more-virulent abortion extremism becomes the standard among our opponents, leaving even many nominally pro-choice people horrified, we have a unique opportunity to save lives by becoming ever-more-charitable in sharing our compassionate message.
Strange as it may seem in the face of the Biden-Harris administration, now is a time for the Pro-Life Movement to gain ground! Human Life of Washington is proud to be a central part of that campaign in our state. Let me share with you some of the ways we’re doing just that.
Support After Abortion – Saving Lives and Healing Hearts
A cold fact is that many women who have abortions have already had one or more abortions.
For years, studies have indicated that women who have had one abortion have a much greater chance of having a second, in large part because of the emotional trauma from the first. The unresolved trauma of one abortion leaves them susceptible to being swayed by the lies which have for 50 years infected our culture – lies which claim that “it’s not a person” or that “it’s just ‘unplugging’ from the fetus, not killing.”
But there is a solution: women (and, for that matter, men) who find healing and forgiveness for having or participating in an abortion don’t go on to have future abortions. The compassionate act of offering support and help to people who are post-abortive is not only an act of charity towards them, it is also an act of charity towards the unborn. Not only will these people not choose to have another abortion, it is also very likely that they will actively speak out against abortion, perhaps saving even more lives in the process.
Human Life of Washington recently hosted a well-attended webcast in partnership with CareNet pregnancy centers, Western Washington Coalition for Life, and others to give witness to the importance of this sometimes-overlooked ministry. We shared testimonies, discussed strategy and best-practices, and raised awareness for particular programs who directly serve people in abortion recovery. You can view the webcast here – https://humanlifewa.org/get-involved.
The fundraiser which accompanied this webcast successfully raised $6,735 with $1,950 in matching funds to support this life-saving ministry. This will be the first of other webcasts like it to draw attention to and raise money for specific pro-life causes.
If you know of someone who needs abortion recovery, we have numerous resources on our website at https://humanlifewa.org/abortion-recovery. Our mission is to help 9 out of 10 people seeking recovery to find healing resources and begin the journey within 30 days of reaching out. In this Year of Compassion, we remind the culture that all people deserve mercy and love.
Hispanic Outreach
Washington is home to a significant Hispanic population. One pro-life pregnancy center in King County noted that as many as 44% of their customers are Hispanic! The Hispanic culture has long been a life-affirming one, but for decades the abortion lobby has targeted them (and other minority groups) by placing abortion centers in their neighborhoods and pouring millions into pushing lies on them. In areas where there is commonly a language barrier, it has historically been hard to organize a concerted pro-life effort to counter this.
Fortunately, Human Life of Washington is fighting back. Pamela Morales, Seattle business owner and Peruvian attorney, has recently joined us as our first Hispanic Outreach Coordinator! She will be serving pregnancy centers with Hispanic clients to facilitate better communication, offering abortion recovery assistance through the SaveOne Bible-study support group, and working to help us provide specific help for the Hispanic population in Washington! We are thrilled to have her on board!
We are also working to make petitions for the overturning of Roe v. Wade available to much of the Hispanic population in Western Washington through collaboration with the Justice Foundation and local churches. Our aim is to urge SCOTUS to overturn past injustices, as was done through the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling.
Matching People to Mission
Of course, these are only a few of the variety of pro-life efforts we are engaged with. From pro-life apologetics training to legislation to education to supporting pregnancy resource centers, we serve as a central point for the Pro-Life Movement in Washington State.
We are regularly contacted by people needing assistance. When people need help fighting to protect their family members in challenging end-of-life cases, we put them in touch with the specialists who can help them. When people are looking for pregnancy resource centers for assistance – or if they want to provide assistance by knowing who in their city can help abortion-minded people choose life – we put them in touch with those centers. When people need information on how legislation will affect pre-born lives, we educate them.
Often, pro-lifers – young and old, men and women – reach out to us because they want to save lives. They want to do something to combat abortion and offer life-saving alternatives, but they don’t know how. We work with them individually to find where their skillsets and interests lie and match them to the training and tools they need to become the best life advocates they can be!
Lobbying
With all the political upheaval, successful lobbying is more important than ever before. Our 501(C)4 – powered entirely by donors – enables us to put up professional resistance to the powerful abortion lobby.
As lobbying season approaches, we are already laying the groundwork for our efforts so we can hit the ground running when it formally begins. Our preparation gives us a fighting chance in a state hostile to life-affirming policy.
You Make it Work
None of this would be possible without your support. Your charity of time, raising awareness, financial assistance, and prayers give us what we need to keep moving forward, even in the face of a harsh national administration and a hostile state government.
We began this year by dubbing it the “Year of Compassion.” Your Charity is the virtue that helps us act on our shared Compassion. Your time, talent, treasure, and faithfulness – sharing our resources with needy people, offering us your encouragement, helping us pay the bills, remembering us at church – are the fuel that powers our labor. You share the credit of our success, and we are immensely grateful for all you do.
Warmest Wishes,
Esther Ripplinger
