27 Apr COVID, Toilet Paper, and Charity
This post originally aired on Apr. 18, 2020.
Life often takes some… unexpected turns.
For example, I never thought I’d see the day where a young chap assaults his mother over a matter of toilet paper. It really begs the question how we’ll relate this story to the younger generations in the years to come.
Will I someday be telling my grandchildren about how I survived the great Toilet Paper Crash of 2020? That I was there when the gates of Wal-Mart fell before the hordes of Clorox-crazed shoppers, when the vast Amazon fleets sank beneath the sea of desperate buyers?
I’m sure I’m not the only one shaking his head in disbelief over all this. What I do know is that joking about the absurdity helps me stay sane in lockdown.
Even lockdown has its hazards, though. We’re all aware that many businesses, ministries, and charities have been severely impacted by the virus. Many people are, quite understandably, cautious about how they spend their money. Unfortunately, that puts even well-established organizations like ours in a bind.
You see, Human Life of Washington is modernizing. Media and ministry are changing, and we’re changing to build upon our legacy of nearly fifty years of advocacy with modern tools spearheaded by such groups as Students for Life, Healing the Culture, and 40 Days for Life. In the coming months, we’ll be launching a video series, partnering with National Right to Life for a digital showing of the pro-life play Viable, and hosting a special webinar for Washington pro-lifers.
But to do that… we need your financial support. With COVID-19 breathing down our necks, many people who have donated in the past have found themselves unable to donate, and our funding is running out.
I know this is a hard time to be asking for money, but I believe, as you do, in the importance of our life-saving ministry. For it to disappear for financial reasons would be a true shame. So, rather than asking for any great amount (though we’d certainly welcome it), I’ll instead ask for the price of a cup of coffee, or a movie from Amazon Prime, or a couple donuts on Sunday.
It’s no exaggeration to say that every dollar counts, now more than ever. If, each month, you were to give us those discretionary funds that might have gone weekly to a $5 latte, or to one $10 movie from Prime, or that handful of dollars earmarked for donuts each Sunday, or any such little purchases, you’d be helping us stay afloat.
Please consider making a donation here. And, if you’re doing any shopping online through Amazon, you can donate to us at no extra charge to yourself by buying through Amazon Smile. Purchase of eligible items through Smile automatically donates a percentage of the purchase to Human Life of Washington.
Thank you in advance for your help during this difficult time. Your support means the world to us.
We promise not to spend it all on toilet paper.
From all of us here at Human Life of Washington, stay safe, stay healthy, and have a wonderful day.
