28 Jan An Irresponsible Bill
Your elected officials need to hear from you.
HB 1141 makes already problematic Assisted-Suicide policies worse.
Even under the current “Death With Dignity Act,” there are serious concerns, including:
- A lack of proper screening for depression – in 2018, only 10 out of 267 applications for Assisted-Suicide were referred to counseling
- Physicians who prescribe the lethal doses are not being legally mandated to have proper training to diagnose depression
- A severe lack of effective oversight to prevent abuse of this system
The new bill makes this much worse in many ways, including:
- Replacing the 15-day wait time with a 3-day wait time
- Allowing those 3 days – just 72 hours – to be waived
- Lowering qualifications for those prescribing lethal drugs – even at the current level, they’re often not properly diagnosing depression
- Removing the “controlled” classification on these drugs, allowing lethal drugs to be shipped in the normal mail system.
Any bad day can be someone’s last. People have no chance to reconsider.
